Four Commercial Tire Retread Myths Debunked

Commercial retread tires get a bad rap. Many people assume the tire scrap on the highway is caused by retread failure. The truth is retread tires are one of the safest, most economical tire options in the trucking industry.

Let’s debunk some of the most common myths.

Myth #1: Retreads are Illegal

That statement is completely false. There are no bans on retread tires in any state. The misconception may stem from information in Part 393, Section § 393.75 of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) regulations that state retread tires may not be used on the front wheels of a bus.

Myth #2: Retreads Aren’t Safe

According to the U.S. Department of Transportation, most tire failures – new and retread – are caused by underinflation, overloading and low tread. Some believe heat compromises the integrity of commercial retread tires. Heat does not affect the adhesive bond on retreads, so they’re just as safe to use as new tires.

Retreads are used on fire trucks, school buses, off-road vehicles, even commercial and military aircraft. There are no federal retread tire regulations, but states have established strict standards for retread manufacturers.

Myth #3: Retreads Don’t Perform Well

Quality retread tires perform as well as any other tire as long as you use the proper tread for your fleet. Tire performance is usually affected by the integrity of the original casing and adhering to a maintenance schedule. Properly retreaded tires maximize fleet performance, enhance fuel-efficiency, increase casing life and reduce downtime.

Myth #4: Retreads Wear Faster Than New Tires

Retread tires are not prone to increased wear and tear. Like any tire, the rate of wear depends on weight load, driving environment and maintenance. Under- or overinflation puts your tires at risk for uneven wear, punctures, rips and blowouts. That’s why monitoring your tire pressure is essential to the longevity of your retreads.
